Objectives and Scope of Competitive Revisions

Investigators with active NCI funding can apply for additional support to expand or accelerate their ongoing research by incorporating an IMAT technology into their work. The purpose of these funding opportunities is based on the recognition that R21 and R33 awards are effective for advancing technology development research to the point of robust analytical validation of a new technology within a generic cancer-relevant context of use, but more work is often required to achieve the “reduction to practice” of a new capability sufficient to encourage end-users from a targeted field to feel confident that they can incorporate that technology into their own research efforts. Exacerbating this limitation is the reality that technology developers often have limited access to downstream end-users that might serve to facilitate this stage of work. The IMAT program therefore offers funding opportunities soliciting competitive revisions to ongoing hypothesis-driven research studies to incentivize the final reduction to practice work within an active collaboration with targeted end-users. These revision projects should serve to fill a capability gap for ongoing projects, offer potential to substantially accelerate progress or otherwise offer the possibility of expanding upon the original research question by virtue of the enhanced capabilities offered by the new tool. In addition, the collaboration should further serve as an independent validation of the new technologies utility within a cancer research field.

NCI has selected the following mechanisms for supporting competitive revisions that serve this capacity:

  • R01 Research Project Grant
  • U01 Research Project – Cooperative Agreements
  • U54 Specialized Center – Cooperative Agreements
  • P01 Program Project Grant
  • P50 Specialized Centers
  • U2C Multi-Component Projects and Centers – Cooperative Agreements

Searching the IMAT Portfolio

A listing of all awards in the IMAT program is available on this website, under “About IMAT\Grants Awarded\” page. A search capability is available here to query any key terms within titles or abstracts as well as allowing you to search for principle investigators or institutions. Once a specific award is found, there are links provided to the NIH Reporter file providing additional details for each project which links you to any publications or noteworthy news associated with that project. Investigators interested in these opportunities are also encouraged to reach out directly to members of the IMAT program team indicating your technology needs or gaps and we will do our best to give you candidates for consideration.
